Macbeth Big Idea: Fate

During our time reading Macbeth we have talked some about fate and how it effects the characters of Macbeth. The three witches are the ones who tell Macbeth and Banquo what will happen in the near future and they both want to use this to their advantage. Unfortunately for Banquo, Macbeth wants it more than Banquo and Macbeth ends up on top. Macbeth becomes greedy and starts to kill friends and innocent people even though there is little to no gain in doing this.

The witches however did not tell Macbeth that he will end up dying to the hand of one of his former friends Macduff. The witches tell Macbeth to only fear Macduff as he was a "C section" meaning he is the only one who can kill Macbeth. This play shows how big of an impact fate and fortune can have on even the best of people.

Macbeth Quotes

Act 1:

"What, can the devil speak true?"

This is Banquo's reaction to when he hears that Macbeth has been named Thane of Cawdor, as the witches predicted. Banquo is saying, how can one trust what someone evil is saying. Banquo knows these witches are evil but he doesn't know if they are to be trusted or not.

"Fair is foul, and foul is fair."

This is sort of the witches philosophy in life. I think they are pretty much saying that when things are good, things are good (foul is fair). When things are bad, they are bad. Considering the witches say this very often, this in my opinion is an important quote.

One more because the others are short

"stars, hide your fire, lit not let not light see my black and deep desires."

This is what Macbeth says as he prepares to commit regicide. He commits the crime at night so he's saying that light can't see him do these terrible things. If the stars shine too bright people will figure out that he wants to kill Duncan.

Free Post

Over the first few days of Spring Break I sat around my house playing video games and eating food. This was great for a while but then it started getting boring. After that I just laid around the house watching TV and watching YouTube videos until on Wednesday my family went to New Orleans and stayed in a hotel on Bourbon Street. Although it smelled bad and there was a strip club right across the street the hotel was really nice.

The main reason we went to New Orleans was to look at Tulane for my sister. We left the hotel on Thursday morning and went to Tulane to take a tour of the campus. For the first 30 minutes of the tour it was great but then the heat and walking got to us and it became a chore to walk around with our guide. As soon as the tour was over we booked it back to Baton Rouge. After we got back I continued my routine of playing video games and eating. Overall my Spring Break was pretty good considering I didn't have math homework or Brine Shrimp to look after.

Response

1. Ambition is a positive, desirable trait in someone.
I strongly agree with this statement because most times ambition is a good trait in someone. In Macbeth, not so much. Macbeth had so much ambition to get power he took it to far. In other situations ambition can help people achieve greater things in life. Having a goal to reach or a certain point can help get things done. When people use ambition for good it can have a very positive impact on things.

2. Women are more compassionate and less violent than men.
I disagree with this because although a lot of the time this is true, woman can be the people who are violent. Lady Macbeth wants to kill Duncan more than Macbeth and she isn't even the one to get the power. Lady Macbeth doesn't care who she has to kill to gain power.

"Showdown" Electric Light Orchestra

She cried to the southern wind
About a love that was sure to end
Every dream in her heart was gone
Headin for a showdown

Bad dreamer, what's your name
Looks like were ridin on the same train
Looks as through there'll be more pain
There's gonna be a showdown

And it's rainin all over the world
Its raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night

She came to me like a friend
She blew in on a southern wind
Now my heart is turned to stone again
There's gonna be a showdown

Save me, oh save me
Its unreal, the suffering
There's gonna be a showdown

And it's rainin all over the world
Its raining all over the world
Tonight, the longest night

Anaphora- red
Sibilance- Blue

In "Showdown" there are multiple anaphoras within the lyrics. I think that these add a nice rhythm to the song. In some ways the sibilance bugs me because there's so much of it, but at the same time it sounds good in the song. There is quite a bit of alliteration in the lyrics of this song and most of it goes with the sibilance.
Over all I think all of these things combined makes for a really smooth and unique song. This is one of my favorite songs and I enjoy it every time I hear it.

Research Paper Draft

In my research paper I worry that my thesis statement isn't arguable. I need help either coming up with a new one or finding a way to make it work. As of right now I am not happy with my thesis statement and think that if I changed it, than my thesis would better reflect the articles that I found. I think I need to go back and change my works cited. I don't think I need help with fixing my works cited but I definitely need fix them.

I think gathering my information for this rough draft was easy but my organization wasn't good. My thoughts on my draft are that I need to change my approach on it. While writing the rough draft I felt lost almost as if I was just writing stuff down and not thinking about it. I think I made my introduction and conclusion a little repetitive and I also need to look at that. I can't think of anything else to say about the rough draft other than I need to change it a lot.

Research Project

My Research Project is about Illegal immigrants crossing over the border of mexico to live and work in Texas. It has an interesting affect on Jobs there. My first thoughts were about why the Mexicans crossed the border into the United States in the first place. I learned that Mexican illegal immigration started after the Mexican Revolution in 1910. People were fleeing their country and came to the United States for a job and to get away from chaos in Mexico. I also learned that most of the Mexican illegal immigrants work for less than minimum wage in agriculture construction and service oriented jobs which puts them at or below poverty level. I am interested in the topic because my family owns a farm in Texas and I've met an illegal immigrant and it made me curious.

My National History Day project is on how illegal immigrants cross over the border of Mexico to live and work in Texas and how this affects aspects of life in that state. Illegal or undocumented immigrants from Mexico are people born in Mexico that enter the United States illegally by crossing the border or by allowing their student or work visas to expire. It is hard to determine exactly how many illegal immigrants are in the United States, but it is believed that the population is between 7-20 million. In 1910 there was the Mexican Revolution. The revolution caused a lot of turmoil in the country of Mexico so thousands of people traveled north into the United States to get out of the chaos and find jobs.

NHD Project

I am doing my National History Day project on Immigration from Mexico to Texas and how it effects people that live in South Texas. A lot of people that live in South Texas either work on a farm or own a farm. People hire illegal immigrants to do work on farms. (driving a combine, helping out with stuff) People that live in that area don't mind illegal immigrants, but if a person that doesn't really know much about them would probably be against it.

My Dad owns a farm in south Texas and I have met illegal immigrants down there when we went down there. The man I met spoke surprisingly good English and he had a license and a registered truck. I still think that illegally immigrating into America is a bad thing to do, but I don't have a problem with the illegal immigrants them selves.

Deven: Interpretation of Evil

In the news, there was a story about a man who was going into people's homes and assaulting women. The man tried to assault a lady across the street from my house. The lady fought the man off and he ran away. The man sneaked in through an unlocked door and then he assaulted her. The man hit her in the face with a suitcase and bruised her arms when she was trying to block the hits. On the news they said that there were multiple occurrences similar to this one and the description of the man was the same every time.

I think this is a terrible thing to do to begin with. The man shouldn't be sneaking around and assaulting anyone. This kind of stuff ruins people's life. This is my interpretation of evil. Just last week someone stole my Dad's bike and it could have been the same guy that assaulted the women. One thing that worries me is that my grandmother lives alone and she is very close to where I live. I feel like there are too many people like this in society.
